Narrowing the Field

Couple of losses by previously undefeated teams makes things a little more interesting as we head into the heart of the season. I'd like to tell you that I saw all of the greatness of last weekend, but I didn't...instead I was experiencing the greatness that is (still) ZZ Top. Hell of a show.

But I digress....how can I not start with this: how about those Red Raiders? This game yet again proved that any given Saturday....you know the rest.

What most impressed me about the Red Raiders was the fact that they didn't cave - you had to know coming into the second half that the Sooners would make a run at some point, great teams always do. Tech's ability to whether that storm was quite impressive.

Which brings me to this weekend where the Sooners visit the Little Apple in Manhattan, Kansas. Kstate is easily the quietest and most stealth 7-0 team in the country right now - I think the line in this game is proof that people simply don't believe in or trust Kstate. They started the season by beating Eastern Kentucky at home 10-7. Less than stellar. They then bounced back to trounce Kent State by more than 37. After that is where they should have earned more respect - beating Miami on the road, Baylor and Missouri at home, and Tech and Kansas on the road. Make no mistake, this is a dangerous team. Oklahoma will no doubt be the stiffest competition to date for the Wildcats.

The interesting thing is - I think Kstate may actually be the best team OU has faced as well. I'm giving Kstate a chance here - I'm taking OU because they are coming off of a loss, but Kstate makes this a ball game down to the wire.

Tech gets Iowa Sate. Rrrriiiight.

Kansas visits Texas - outside of the 100K at DKR, about 30 people are going to see this one. Thank you Longhorn Network. The good news for Texas is maybe no one will be watching so they can afford an ugly win to tune up for tech. Seriously, that's what it's come to? Celebrating the fact that we can get an ugly win because no one will watch it? Ugh.

One more note on the rumors that Texas is going to go back to rotating QBs this weekend - what is the deal? Both QBs are pretty equal, both are young, and neither have a ton of experience - just pick one and go with it. And I'm sorry, but if Case McCoy's last name isn't McCoy I seriously doubt we're having any real debate. Let's just pick a horse and ride with it.

Texas by 14.

Other than that - they tell us that Stanford at USC is a big game, but I'm taking the Cardinal by 2 touchdowns. They're good. Real good.

NFL:
Been a while since I really sunk my teeth into some NFL talk so let's get it on.

Cowboys - Interesting team in an interesting division. As erratic as they've been, they get a tough game in Philly on Sunday night and then they get a pretty easy slate with games against Seattle, Arizona, Miami, Washington and Buffalo. They're 3-3 now and could conceivably be 8-4. Playing in Philly is always tough, but after that those are very winnable games. If the Cowboys are 8-4 heading into the final quarter of the season, look out because you know the other teams in that division will be all over the place (they always are).

Colts - Can we go ahead and give Peyton Manning the MVP award now? Has there ever been a player in the NFL who has meant more to his team? I think not. The question is, can this Colts team find a way to win a game. The bigger question is, should the Colts find themselves with the winning numbers for the Andrew Luck lottery, do they take him? Do you invest that money in a QB who'll sit and learn behind one of the best for 2-4 years? Unfortunately Polian has screwed the pooch for the last several years so he may feel backed into a corner. Will be interesting, but they are a mess.

Steelers - Good team starting to get on a roll. Dangerous team going into second half of the year. With Baltimore's loss against Jacksonville, that race will only tighten up.

Packers - About as good as a team can be playing right now. Are you kidding me with Aaron Rodgers? He's on pace to redefine "great season".

Lions - Don't start folding, can't do it. Gotta find a way to keep it going.

World Series:
Easily the most exciting baseball I've ever watched (I don't watch a lot of baseball). I have only a few memories of watching great baseball moments, but this world series has been something else. Very exciting.

With that said - I'm not sure how the Rangers claw back from a defeat like they saw tonight. I just don't know how they do it. The one thing they can remind themselves of all night - they haven't lost two straight games in like 2 months or more. There's something to be said for that.

But that was bad....very, very bad.

Will be interesting - y'all enjoy the weekend. Someone with Grande tell me how the Horns looked on Saturday night.
