Beware the Bruins
Yeah, I know, it sounds silly and stupid, but seriously....has Texas ever beaten UCLA? I don't think so. Coming into the season I picked UCLA as one of four Texas losses and judging by the Bruins' showing these last two weeks I'd say a loss will be U-G-L-Y.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves, we've got a few things to cover from last week's action....
Win is a Win:
I will take it. There's no question that last year's Texas team loses that game, and probably loses big. As painful as it is for all involved, Gilbert was simply not getting it done in numerous facets of QB play - I'll tell, it was good they pulled him when they did because that had all the makings of the wheels coming completely off. It's too bad, although he was venturing into that "Chris Simms" territory, he doesn't bring quite as much animosity given he was "next in line" whereas Simms came in and "stole" Major's job. Either way, it ain't working.
With all of that said - it was amazing how the body language and attitude of the offense completely changed when McCoy and Ash were in the game. It's clear where the confidence of the team lies. I know these guys are young and getting their first real action, but I'm not at all a fan of the dual QB situation - I understand it's probably hard to choose between 2 freshman (essentially), but I have to believe the goal is to establish that number one spot pretty quick. You can use both, but every other/every third play shit isn't going to work all year. I think Ash's upside is higher, but if I have to pick one to go into OU with I'd probably go with McCoy....simply because I'm so comfortable saying/hearing "McCoy to Shipley". It just sounds right and this is the universe sort of keeping that mojo going....right? No? Whatever, just pick one.
I'm going to keep saying this until it happens....give Malcolm Brown the ball, give Malcolm Brown the ball, give Malcolm Brown the ball, give Malcolm Brown the ball..... at least 18 (preferably 20+) times a game. OK?
Looking ahead, you all know how I feel. Texas was a more talented team last year in Austin and got humiliated. Remember, UCLA finished last year 4-8....they were bad. And I don't need to remind you what happened back in the 90s. Texas is a far more talented team this year....My heart and competitive nature tells me Texas wins, but this is a very young team going on the road to play a team that truly believes they will beat you because they always have. Will be interesting. If I'm picking a winner I'm taking the Bruins. Until I see otherwise, how could I not?
Conference Realignment Rumors:
Nope.
Oklahoma at Florida State:
I know we haven't really seen a whole lot from these teams, but I can't help thinking that when this game is over we'll all wonder why in the world we would think Florida State was the 5th best team in the country. I hope I'm wrong as you always want to see a good game, but I don't think I am.
Other Random Notes from the weekend:

Other Random Notes from the weekend:
- I have to believe that Notre Dame fans are on suicide watch, right? How brutal have these first two weeks been?
- If you're getting a bye in week 2, you're getting screwed...that's garbage.
- Joe Pa has to retire....this is just getting ridiculous. I can't blame Penn State for forcing a situation there - they will never get better than they are with him in place.
- Georgia played like a desperate team, which they needed to do. Unfortunately, I think barring a crazy 10-game winning streak, Mark Richt (sp?) is gone.
- I should be more excited about Tennessee/Florida...weird.
- There is actually a very interesting game Saturday evening with Ohio State visiting Miami. Both teams have had their fair share of distractions during the off season and we're not really sure how good either team really is. Keep an eye on that one.
- I'm watching LSU/Miss State right now and am about to puke listening to these guys talk jerk off about the SEC. Can someone, anyone at all, explain how it's possible that Craig James still has a job? It's absurd - totally erodes ESPN's credibility in my opinion.
- Doing ACL Friday - I know about 3 bands playing, but looking forward to checking out a lot of new stuff (new to me). I really want to see Kanye...seriously.
- Boise getting a Friday night game is ridiculous.
- Here's my weekly Chef Special: Pretty crazy story out of Fort Collins, CO. A player by the name of Nordly Capi, defensive end for the Colorado State Rams had a game for the ages last weekend. He was third-string defensive end for the CO State Rams and after an injury to the starter and something else (I forget) happened to the back up, Capi got his shot.....and recorded 3.5 sacks and forced 4 fumbles. Needless to say, Capi is now listed as the starter at defensive end. Couple of quick questions: First, who the hell is responsible for the depth chart? And second, is he an idiot? Guys don't just suck ass in practice and then go produce a game like that at game speed. Either way, that dude is bad to the bone.
- I'm sorry but Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez simply aren't as good as folks seem to think. Sanchez still has time to grow, but lest we forget, Romo has been around for six years. Can't make mistakes like he made in the fourth quarter in this league.
- I had Tom Brady as my QB in fantasy and lost. Unbelievable.
- Andy Dalton is going to be a good quarterback in this league.
- Wow, what a game by Cam Newton. It's not everyday a raw, athletic, running quarterback comes in to his first professional game and breaks a record held by a guy by the name of Peyton Manning. I bet Steve Smith is real happy.
- That was quite an ass kicking put on the Steelers there. Very surprised to see that. It's one game though, let's settle down.
- The Lions had a lot in common with the Longhorns - rebuilding team with a lot of talent. Played a good team and gutted out a win that they probably should have lost, and would have lost a year ago. Detroit is looking up folks, and that's not a joke.
- Man, the Giants may bring up the rear in the NFC East this year. Rex Grossman? Really? Damn.
- Quick public service announcement for the folks in the greater Houston area - there are actually 15 more games left this season - so playoff spots haven't yet been earned....
- Kansas City needs....something. That can't happen....at home....against Buffalo.
- Hey Bronco fan - are you really screaming for Tim Tebow? Last I checked, he doesn't play tackle or guard. You need to be screaming for offensive line help. Wanting Tebow so he can better avoid the pass rush is like me aiming right in golf to compensate for the slice. I'm not really fixing anything, I'm just adjusting and hoping for the best. Trust me, when the game's on the line in week 10, you want Orton.
- Man, how important was nutting out that win for the Chargers - the whole game I had visions of their usual early-year swan song. They get a tough one against New England this weekend - try and catch that game if you can.
