Parity At It's Best
I'm talking about the NFL here folks. 9-10 games into the season and we're about as clear on the playoffs as we were in August. We may very well have an 8-8 or even 7-9 team may win the NFC West. Should be a hell of a final 7 weeks.
Too bad we don't have such a thing in the college game - we've got 4-5 really good teams and 2 or 3 of them will likely get hosed. So we've got that going for us. But it could be worse, we could be Texas fans right? Right? Ugh.
Mercifully I missed most of the Texas/Kansas State game, but I knew it was ugly when I read a text from Hooser that read, "you don't need to rush in from hunting to watch the games, just stay out and spotlight or something." - that's never good to hear...and it wasn't. And sheesh, I hope Mack and company had someone watching over Gilbert the few days after, I could imagine if he were on suicide watch. He just sort of crumbled there didn't he. You got to pull him in that situation in my opinion. Not second-guessing the decision because hey, you weren't going to win that game come hell or high water, but at some point you have to think about that kid's psyche.
So over the last few weeks I've spent a bit of time defending Greg Davis - not because he's my favorite coach, but rather if you look at his career, he's fielded some of the top offenses in the country. Well, I've got some info for you courtesy of one Rod Babers: Since coming to Texas with Mack, Greg Davis' offense hasn't finished any worse than the 17th ranked offense in the country. That's like 12 years of having your offense ranked 17th or better. Do you realize how good that is? This year you ask? Texas is currently ranked 82nd in the country. Not so good.
Here's my point: if you want to fire Greg Davis because he hasn't been able to adjust his scheme for his players, that's one thing. But to say he's been terrible his time here is flat out wrong. He has however made some very poor decisions this season including forcing a power running game down the throat of a QB who's more than capable of continuing the zone read scheme....the best offense this team has had all year is when GG mixes in some called runs. Remember way back when they beat Nebraska? That game plan is what got them the early lead and jump on momentum.
In terms of this weekend's game - I just don't see how they win this. How could I or anyone else think they can win this game? The Cowboys have a fast-paced offense headed by Tech's old offensive coordinator and they move fast. They have a veteran QB, veteran RB and they've been snake bit by Texas every year going back to the early Vince Young days. If these guys smell just an ounce of blood they'll pounce - make no mistake, they want nothing more than to humiliate Texas in their own home and get some payback. The only thing that could happen is they pull a Nebraska and completely tighten up and step on their own you-know-whats. I don't see it happening - Texas is incapable of putting the ball in the end zone and if they get down early, the flood gates will open and pour out a sea of orange....and not the burnt kind.
Oklahoma State - 49
Texas - 22
All Eyes on Waco
Well, maybe not all eyes, but this should be a good game and can certainly make some interesting developments in the Big 12 South. Aggies are riding a huge high coming off the big OU win while Baylor is still learning how to close out a solid year. This has trap game for the Aggies written all over it - although a trap game would indicate that a largely favored team and I think these two teams are pretty darn evenly matched.
Baylor's defense may struggle to contain the Aggie offense, but I think Griffin gives the "Wrecking Crew" fits...and I'm sorry Aggie fans, but you have nothing that even resembles a Wrecking Crew from the days of old. Chanting Wrecking Crew is an insult to the original Wrecking Crew. I'm just saying. If Tannenhill gets hot they could light this Bears defense up - they just gave up 55 points to Okie State (how did Texas not put the damn ball in the end zone more in that game). Baylor takes this one and it's their last win of the season.
Baylor - 33
Texas A&M - 20

- Bad news for Tech - you travel to Norman where OU is coming off a humiliating loss to a mediocre Aggie team. I smell another potential 50-point blowout not unlike 2 years ago.
- How about this - the Florida/S. Carolina game will decide who will represent the SEC East in the conference title game. That's weird.
- Sooo, here's what I think: 1) Cam Newton and his father are clearly dishonest folks who were clearly looking for money. 2) The bulk of the blame probably should go to the father who clearly was not acting responsibly nor setting a good example. Disgraceful if you ask me (and if it's true....which he hasn't denied as of yet). 3) He hasn't been accused of doing anything while at Auburn, right? So he's not going to lose any eligibility, at least this year. 4) I'm pretty sure this is an attempt to smear his name - regardless of his guilt or innocence. That's what I pretty much know. Losers all around in this scenario and it's unfortunate.
- Speaking of Auburn - upset alert against Georgia this weekend...Just a few distractions for Gene's team.
- Can Colt McCoy keep the streak alive? If he can come out of this game looking like he has over the last few games, go ahead and put his name at the top of the "Thank God We Don't Have To Find Another QB" list for Cleveland fans. Hell of a job he's doing and I'm not ashamed to say I'm shocked. Truly.
