Right Around the Corner

My friends it's been far too long since I last blew your minds with my words of wisdom and insight...something like that.

I don't know about you guys, but I think this is the toughest stretch of "sports" to go through - endless baseball with hints of Tour de France doping stories and golf sprinkled throughout. But fear not, August is just around the corner which means the sports media hacks will be enlightening us with the sure bets on winning the national championship (you think we'll hear much about USC this year??) and super bowl.

But you won't find any football in this issue (here's where the abandonment rate for this blog will sky rocket) - not just yet. But, I will touch on the more interesting and compelling stories from the summer and give my two cents. Fear not, within the next few weeks we'll be in full force of assinine college football debates based on nothing more than we're just excited it's hear so we'll say just about anything to talk about it....I know, I can't wait either.

Here we go...

MIKE VICK:
Seriously, let's just lock this piece of shit in a deep, dark hole for the rest of his life. What a complete idiot. I know, I know - he's innocent until proven guilty, but let me explain something here, this is a federal prosecutor. This isn't some rogue prosecutor in Durham, NC or somewhere in Colorado looking to make a name for himself by prosecuting sports stars; these are the feds. They don't just take cases to court because it's an election year. Now, one of the co-defendants is looking to plea bargain - in real-world terms that means he's looking to name names so he can save his ass. When all of this unfolds I don't imagine it will play out very well for Vick. As a matter of fact, I do honestly believe he has played his last organized football game at any level. And you know what, I hope that's true also. Obviously I hope all of this is not true (of course dog fighting happens and it's real..and it's disgusting, but I hope Vick's not involved at any level).

If I were Arthur Blank (Falcons' owner) I think I would tell this kid to hit the road. Unfortunatley, in the world of public opinion and perception, he's already screwed. Bringing Vick back to your team will do absolutely no good on any level. I do also understand his position though - he's invested in this kid A LOT and stuck with him and believed in him - this has to be heartbreaking to the guy. I do love though how Blank was "ready to suspend Vick for 4 games until the league came in and asked him to wait." 4 GAMES!!! My God, don't you just love the conviction by which they were ready to suspend him for 4 games for something like this? Idiots.

I'll say it again, he's gone and gone for good from the NFL. And another thing, it's not like he's a great QB or anything either. Yes, he's a superstar, but his star power came more from what he did in college than anything he's done at the NFL level (which again is nothing). Unfortunatey I say good riddance to this guy. Regardless of the details of this particular case, he was involved in this in some way, there's no question about that.

TOUR DE FRANCE:
I've said it before and I'll say it again. They need to completely scrap this event (and perhaps the sport) until they can get their you-know-what together and get a working system in place. This sport is an utter train wreck. You COULD try and argue that it's not different than baseball, but there's one main difference - the baseball doping scandal has centered around a half dozen guys in the past 5-6 years and really much of that attention is focused on 1 person (Bonds). The tour though seems as if there are new guys getting caught every single year - it's endless.

Look, I don't like watching guys ride bikes for 5 hours on television, I find nothing intriguing or exciting about it. BUT, it has to be one of the most grueling and difficult sporting events in the world, I don't doubt that for a second. But, this sport really needs to try and revive some credibility and integrity - there is literally none at any level. Not with the participants and certainly not with the testers. I can't say that I know if these issues extend throughout the sport outside of this event, but I would imagine they do to an extent. Put the event on hold, even if just for one year, and get your stuff together: create better testing standards, go find and use a testing entity that is capable of doing it right, find testers who are unbiased and competent and who aren't interested in witch hunts. Perfection is not realistic, but how about progress???

BRITISH OPEN:
Yet again Sergio Garcia proves he doesn't belong in the elite of golf...the great ones don't make excuses like that when they blow a lead. I HATE when pro athletes make themselves to sound like victims of some higher power when they don't win - play better next time Sergio, that's all there is to it.

NBA REFS:
This is probably the worst possible thing that could have happened to the NBA...and us, the fans. More so for us because now we have to hear Mark Cuban's whiney ass pissing and moaning for another year or two about the officiating.

BONDS:
Sheesh, is this whole puppet show over with yet or what? 2 more to break the record and then hopefully we won't have to hear about it anymore. By the way, Barry Bonds was (and possibly still is) on steroids which had a lot to do with him hitting so many home runs. Just in case some of you hadn't heard that yet.

BECKHAM:
Does anyone really believe that this guy is just going to come over here and all of a sudden turn Soccer into a giant sport? Let me remind everyone of a few things: NFL, College Football, March Madness and the NBA. Soccer will NEVER EVER come close to being as popular as any of these. Not ever.

Have you heard Beckham talk? He sounds like a 10-year old boy!

ESPN:
So have any of you been catching the "Who's Now" series on ESPN Sportscenter? Wow, I mean...WOW! This is how you know it's a slow season of sports - the network runs a 2-month long contest to determine who's more Now. I literally have no idea what this means and how one determines if Derek Jeter is more Now than Dwayne Wade. They even have brackets like in March Madness. I can just imagine the brainstorming meeting now. "Let's go with who's more Now - we can make it real ambiguous so no one really has to explain it, but we'll have a panel of folks debating it each week."

"Great, let's run with it."

Good work guys, don't work too hard.

That's what I got folks - little Ella is waking up so gotta run. I'll be back in a few weeks to start talking some football!!!

Enjoy the week.
