Bowl-Mania

For the first time I found myself thinking, "man there are way too many crappy bowl games."

With exception of 3 games that I can recall right now (2 of them were yesterday), this bowl season has been quite dull. I mean, we could cut the games down from 32 to 18 or 20 and still probably have too many. Instead, we'll have 34 games next year and close to 40 the year after that if things continue to progress like this.

Anyway, about those good games. First and foremost, those Red Raiders had the biggest comeback in bowl game history last night erasing a 31-point deficit in about a quarter and a half. Unfortunately I missed this one, but I kept asking myself this morning - so who sucks more, Tech or Minnesota??? Clearly it's the Gophers - they were up 38-7 with 7 minutes left in the 3rd - how in the world do you lose that game????

The other great game from yesterday was Oregon State and Missouri - don't you just love a coach who decides to go for 2 to win the game rather than kicking the 1 point for the tie?? Good football there. And yet again Missouri shows up for just a portion of the game. They were in control with about 5-6 minutes to go and a 2 touchdown lead.

Nice outing by the Aggies and Wildcats of Kstate - my gosh, how about making the game competitive. Am I the only Horns fan who felt a little sting in the back of neck after seeing these two games - how in the world did Texas manage to lose to both of thse teams??? And Cal had 2 RBs with 100+ yards. We had none. I hope you're paying attention Mac...

Memo to Javorski Lane - you might want to lay off of the Ho-Hos and Big Macs. I don't care what the "official" game guide said, he had to be pushing 280 during that game, at least. When you're a running back and you in your 2 point stance with your hands on your knees, it's not good when your gut is hanging about 2 inches from the ground. Get that dude on a treadmill.

And speaking of A&M running backs - Goodson is definitely the real deal. Not sure how bad his injury is, but he's got to be your #1 RB going into next year. Lane started very strong, but the more I see him, the more I'm thinking "special-down" back (short yardage, blocking, etc.).

TEXAS vs. IOWA:
Well, I guess today is the "big game". I'll be honest, I haven't read one article/quote about anything dealing with this game. Here's what I'm hoping to see:
- Get away from the zone read! It works if you have VY as your QB. If you don't, it doesn't. It also puts too much pressure on our QB.
- Put the freaking ball in the hands of your playmakers. I'd like to see the receivers get more involved in this game - especially Limas Sweed.
- Play with intensity. I want to see our guys light people up and blow them off the line. Pretend like your pride is on the line...because it is!
- Give everyone something to think about going into next year - don't be predictable, don't run the same 15 plays we've run all year, and the year before that...and the year before that...Mix it up a bit.
- Just win.

Here's hoping the Big 12 can make a comeback here in the last few games - Big 12 is 2 for 6 right now in bowl games. Ouch!

Stay tuned for another posting sometime on New Years Day.
