Short, Sweet and To The Point

Peaking my head out for a quick rant....

Texas Football:
In the immortal words of one Hank Hill, "What in the hell?". Let's just assume for 2 seconds that the dust has, in fact, settled on the 40 acres and the music has stopped on this musical chairs off season. Not bad. Circumstances notwithstanding, who wouldn't be happy to have Akina coaching the secondary? I like Jerry Gray and would have been happy with him as well, but can you really blame him for taking a better job at more than twice the salary? Of course not. And who knows more about the incoming secondary players? No one. You're losing 2 starting cornerbacks and you probably would rather have someone who knows the new kids coming in best, vs someone who knows nothing about them. I'm just saying...

With all of that said, seriously? Mack got thrown a few curve balls over the last few months and it sure brought some excitement. I guess you could say he's earned his money this off season.....wait, I still wouldn't say that.

For those of you that read the Statesman article on Sunday, and especially those that took offense to it, settle down. What about is incorrect? It's somewhat humorous how it's treated like it's Watergate or something. In hindsight, you can totally see how complacency like that would happen - you just go out and win 10+ games year in and year out for over a decade....yeah, complacency will happen. Either way, should be a very interesting season for these Longhorns coming up - I'm most fascinated to see if we ever see Garrett Gilbert start another game....not saying it will or won't happen, I'm just saying that it's going to be a great storyline.

Texas Basketball:
I don't want to jinx anything here, but daaaaaaaaaaamn. This team is dirty, dirty good right now. I'm not making any proclamations that they're going to win it all, but they most certainly are playing as good as anyone in the country right now. Big East still has the sickest competition top to bottom, but I would put Texas against anyone right now. I'm waiting for them to lose focus and drop one (note: last game of the season is in Lincoln...I'm just saying), but I keep watching and they keep blowing the doors off the competition. And look at their losses - UCONN by 1 in overtime, Pittsburgh by 2, and of course the, ahem, blowout loss at USC. But, they can hang with the Big East heavy hitters which is good.

It's amazing how far Balbay has come since he first showed up on campus weighing a buck-ten and change. His defensive play and quickness is really amazing. Big 12 could be looking at two number 1 seeds come late March.

There's about 6 games left in conference play (including the current blowout against Okie State happening as I type this) and so far they are looking to run through like sh*t through a goose. But lest we forget, these are 19-21 year old kids....lapses in focus aren't uncommon. We'll see, but right now these Horns are right up there with Duke, Ohio State, Pitt, UCONN, Syracuse, etc. Should be a great March (isn't it always?).

NBA:
Well, I was going to give my synopsis on the first-half of the season, but I looked up and saw that the Lakers lost to the Cleveland F'ng Cavaliers and I am so mad I can't even talk about it. 3-straight losses after winning 4 straight on the road - this is a broken team heading into the all-star break. They need it.

That's what I got - keep it real.
